AI Scam Alert- Vulnerable Phone Scams

Artificial intelligence voice simulators are making it easier for scammers to take advantage of vulnerable and elderly people over the phone. Impersonating a loved one in distress, scammers trick people into thinking there is an emergency and a family or friend is in dire need of money. This is causing horror to family members trying to frantically help while not realizing it is a scam.

AI scams or imposter scams were the most frequently reported fraud in 2022 with 5,000 victims scammed out of $11 million over the phone. Scamming is done all over the world and often includes call blocking. This makes it hard for law enforcement to track and crack down on the crime.

Here are 10 tips from the BBB to help protect you and your loved ones from falling for sophisticated scams:

  1. Never send money via gift card or wire transfer to someone you have never met face-to-face.
  2. Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments in unsolicited emails.
  3. Don’t believe everything you see or hear.
  4. Double-check that your online purchase is secure before checking out.
  5. Use extreme caution when dealing with anyone you’ve met online.
  6. Never share personally identifiable information.
  7. Resist the pressure to act immediately.
  8. Use secure and traceable transactions.
  9. Whenever possible, work with local businesses.
  10. Be cautious about what you share on social media.
